What to Expect at Your Free In-Home Window & Door Consultation

A man shows a window to a smiling woman in a showroom setting.

You’ve probably been through a free in-home estimate before. The consultant shows up with a binder full of manufacturer discounts, stacks promotions on top of each other until the original price looks embarrassing, and the number drops two more times before they reach the door. You end up agreeing to something just to make it stop!

That’s not what happens here.

Spring House Window & Door has been doing free in-home window and door consultations since 1989. The visit is built around one goal: giving you accurate information and a real number so you can make a decision on your own schedule. Here’s exactly what to expect, from booking to the written estimate in your inbox.

The Short Answer

A free in-home window or door consultation with SHWD runs 60 to 90 minutes. A trained consultant takes precise measurements of every opening you want to address, walks through the brands and products that fit your home and your budget, and answers your questions. Within 24 hours, you receive a written estimate with our best price that’s good for 30 days. There’s no “must act now” pressure or expiring discounts.

Before the Visit: Nothing You Need to Prepare

You don’t need to research window brands. You don’t even need to know whether you want double or triple pane, casement or double-hung, vinyl or fiberglass. That’s the consultant’s job.

What does help: knowing which windows or doors are giving you trouble and being ready to walk the home. If you’ve noticed drafts in an upstairs bedroom, foggy glass in the kitchen, or a patio door that sticks every summer, make a mental note. You can also review before the appointment if you want a structured checklist to work from.

Otherwise, just be home. The consultant handles the rest.

What Happens During Your Free In-Home Consultation

Your consultant will ask what’s prompting the project, whether there’s a timeline in mind, and what matters most to you: efficiency, budget, design, or some mix of all three. That shapes everything that follows.

A homeowner whose utility bills are climbing gets a different product recommendation than someone replacing builder-grade windows because they don’t match a recent kitchen refresh. Both are totally legitimate reasons. The consultation is structured to serve whichever one is yours.

From there, you walk the home together. The consultant looks at each opening you want to address and notes what’s there now: frame material, condition, glass type, how the original installation was done, and whether there’s visible seal failure or water damage. A window can look fine from inside and have water infiltration behind the casing that only becomes visible during a proper inspection. Catching that at the consultation stage means the estimate reflects the actual scope, not a pleasant fiction.

The Measurement Process: Why Precision Matters

Most window and door problems trace back to the installation, not the product. The wrong measurement, a shimmed frame, or a gap in the flashing all let air and water in over time, regardless of how good the window itself is.

SHWD measures every opening to spec. That means true dimensions rather than rough estimates. For replacement windows, it involves checking the existing frame for square, measuring at multiple points across the opening, and accounting for any settling in the structure. Older homes, like the stone colonials in Tredyffrin, the Victorian-era houses in Norristown, or the 1960s ranches throughout the Hockessin corridor, often have openings that aren’t perfectly square. Those require precision ordering, not a standard-size substitution.

This measurement discipline is also what makes the SHWD Lifetime Installation Warranty possible. The warranty covers the installation itself, for life. That kind of commitment requires getting it right the first time, which starts with accurate measurement.

Brand and Product Selection: You’re Not Locked Into One Option

Here’s where the consultation looks different from what you’d get at a single-brand competitor.

SHWD carries windows from Marvin, ProVia, MI, Vytek, and Sunrise (at Spring House). For doors, the lineup includes Therma-Tru, Simpson, ProVia, Marvin, MI sliders, and Reeb interior doors. The consultant can walk you through multiple options in the same price tier and explain in plain language what you’re getting for the difference.

A U-factor of 0.27 versus 0.30 matters in a north-facing room that bleeds heat through the glass all winter. A fiberglass frame holds dimensional stability differently than vinyl across the temperature swings PA and DE see between January and August. The consultant explains those differences without a sales agenda attached, because the same conversation applies whether you end up choosing Marvin or ProVia or any of the other quality brands we carry.

If your home has HOA restrictions or sits in a historic district, the consultant can also speak to which products tend to pass architectural review and which configurations commonly require a variance request. Homeowners throughout Chester and Montgomery counties, and in older neighborhoods have navigated this. An experienced local consultant knows what the review boards typically look for.

Your 24-Hour Written Estimate

Within 24 hours of the consultation, you receive a written, itemized estimate. It breaks down product, quantity, specifications, installation, and total. The price is locked in for 30 days.

There’s no expiring discount that miraculously resets when you say you need more time. The estimate is yours to review at whatever pace makes sense for your household.

If you have questions after reading it, the consultant who visited your home handles those questions directly, not a call center routing system.

What the Consultation Is Not

SHWD built its business on referrals and repeat customers, not high-pressure sales. A homeowner who felt rushed into a decision they weren’t ready for doesn’t come back and doesn’t send their neighbors. A homeowner who got straight answers and felt respected does both.

You can book a consultation, read the estimate, and take six months to decide. The 30-day price lock will expire, but you can always request a refresh. Nothing about the consultation commits you to anything.

What a Consultation Looks Like Across the SHWD Service Area

A consultation at a 1920s Victorian rowhouse in Norristown looks different from one at a 2019 new build in Devon. The older home often has masonry openings requiring products sized for non-standard rough openings and frames that need careful squaring before measurement. The new build might have builder-grade windows that function but are outclassed by what’s available in the same price range. And the difference can be surprisingly visible once you see them side by side.

The Main Line stone colonials, the 1970s splits in Lansdale, the brick ranches off Old Lancaster Pike in Hockessin, the colonial revivals near King of Prussia… every home type has its own considerations for measurement, product fit, and what the installation scope actually involves. SHWD consultants have worked across all of these neighborhoods since 1989. They know the common issues, the products that fit, and what to watch for during measurement in each housing stock.

That local knowledge doesn’t appear in a spec sheet. It shows up in how the estimate is built and how the installation goes.

Book at Any of Our Four Showrooms

The consultation process is the same whether you schedule through Malvern, Hockessin, Spring House, or Reading. In-house crews, to-spec measurement, a 24-hour written estimate, and a Lifetime Installation Warranty on every project.

If you’d like to see product samples before booking, our showrooms are open during regular hours with no appointment required. You can handle a Marvin casement, compare Therma-Tru finish options, or look at glass package differences in person before the consultation ever happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the free in-home consultation take?

Plan for 60 to 90 minutes for a typical project covering six to ten openings. Larger projects, or homes where extensive measurement is needed, can run a little longer. The consultant will give you a realistic time estimate when you book.

Do I need to know what I want before the appointment?

No. You don’t need to arrive with a brand preference or product type in mind. Knowing which areas are giving you trouble — drafts, fogging, sticking, noise — is enough to start. The consultant covers the product selection side.

Will I get a price at the consultation, or afterward?

Afterward. The consultant takes precise measurements and specs during the visit, then produces a written, itemized estimate within 24 hours. Same-appointment pricing isn’t possible when measurement accuracy is the foundation of the job.

Is painting included in the installation?

Products can be ordered factory-finished, and SHWD handles all exterior capping and trim work. Interior trim is replaced with primed trim, but painting that primed trim is the homeowner’s responsibility — either yourself or through a painter you arrange. Your consultant will walk through exactly what SHWD covers and what you’ll coordinate separately.

How is debris and old material handled?

SHWD crews pack in and pack out each day. Old windows, doors, packaging, and all other debris are hauled away and disposed of at SHWD’s warehouse. Your home is left the way the crew found it at the end of each working day.

Can I get a consultation for just one or two windows?

Yes. Projects of any size qualify for a free in-home consultation and a written estimate. Some homeowners start with the worst-performing openings and phase the remainder over time. Your consultant can help you prioritize if that’s the direction you want to go.
